Extremely inconsiderate medical aid
I was diagnosed with Suppurative Appendicitis (a later stage of appendicitis) and medical emergency that always requires prompt surgery to remove the appendix. If it was left untreated, it would eventually burst, spilling infectious materials into my abdominal cavity and that can be fatal. Tuesday evening on the 24th of July around 9pm I was vomiting I had fever and the pain on my stomach become worse and for some reason I couldn’t breathe possibly thought I was dying because didn’t know what was wrong with me. An ambulance was called and I was taken to a hospital I stay in Kibler Park the nearest hospital is Mulbarton netcare hospital which is 10 minutes away. When I joined the medical aid they told me in case of emergency I can go to ANY netcare hospital. After the operation I was discharged from the hospital on the 27th July but on Sunday evening on the 29th of July I had an urge to pass stools as it had not happened ever since the operation. I tried various remedies I drank milk, bicarbonate of soda but I couldn’t pass it was so difficult and painful also considering I had stiches on my stomach this lasted from 9 pm – 11 pm I was in pain. I was rushed back to the hospital where they performed about three different methods to pass stools and I was than discharged the following day the 30th with a prescription that helps soften stools. By the way I’ve to explain this to so many operators every time I called in and them telling me they will escalate my case to their manager. I’ve now received statements with short payments from the hospital and a doctor amount to R6500 and I spoke to one of the operators today who told me there’s also a part of hospital bill amounting to R14000 that has not yet been authorized for payment a decision needs to be finalised first for it to be paid because they saying I electively choose to go to mulbarton hospital and that the charges are larger than the "usual and customary." I don’t know how is this possible if I was sick and needed immediate medical attention. I also don’t understand why the medical aid people didn’t inform the mulbarton hospital that they should stabilize me and then transfer me to their network hospital? this didn’t happen so I automatically thought everything was fine. I’m just a low income employee I choose to join compare networx medical aid with hope that when an emergency like this happens I would be helped and NOT have a headache and stress of large short paid hospital bills which will leave me in the worst financial position. I’m really simply not in a financial situation where it will be possible to meet the current terms I’m so stressed.
