City (of Johannesburg) Power sabotage their own prepaid infrastructure and ****** customers to reconnect.
I own some flats in Roodepoort that I rent out. In 2011 COJ, out of the blue, took it on themselves to install prepaid power meters. I was elated, since I was forever trying to get the tenants to pay for their electricity. All good and well, but in 2014 they 'dropped a phase' and 370 Volts went through the building, toasting tvs and computers etc. 2 of the prepaid power meters also got fried. I reported it and soon power was back in the 2 flats in question. A few months later it came to my attention that the power meters had been bypassed (or 'bridged out'). I reported it again. And again. And again. and again.... I phoned, I emailed, I went to Roodepoort municipality, etc etc. I have 7 reference numbers to show for all my trouble. Then, last weekend, suddenly COJ techs arrive at the flats - on a Saturday afternoon and promptly cut off the power and told me I have to go to City Power to pay a fine because the power meters were bridged out. (Yes - I reported it I told them, Just doing our job they reply) So on Monday afternoon takeleave and go through to Booysens, with all the proofs, emails, referenced numbers etc. Nothing. They tell me to pay R11300 per flat on the spot (R22600 in total) or they won't reconnect. Three hours I argue with them. THEIR TECHNICIANS bridged the power out, I tell them. THEIR METER WAS BRIDGED OUT, I tell them. THEIR CLIENTS BRIBED THEIR TECHNICIANS, I tell them. Nothing. Not even sympathy. I paid. Pathetic.
