Unsolicited subscription services
I recently logged a complaint with WASPA with regards to my phone number being subscribed to daily subscription services of about R20 in total. All these subscription companies say that this was a double opt-in from my side and according to the proof they send me it shows that this is done via the Cell C app. I hardly ever use this app and have proof of messages I received during the night while sleeping of me subscribing to these services. How can I subscribe to a short code (43006). I even blocked my number from being able to subscribe to premium rated services and while being blocked, I kept getting smses saying that I can not subscribe (not that I am even trying), meaning that this was an auto opt-in of some sort without my consent. The below companies were involved and this all started happening on the same day and did not stop until I complained:
- DATA SMS ZA - BN REV - JOKER MOBILE - Netsmart SA
When I logged in to the Cell C app I could see I was subscribed to these services but the consultant at Cell C could not tell me why and how, but this was available on their app and I received SMSes from their platform. Imagine having 1 million customers, and you subscribe them to a R10 service without knowing. Easy money for a company that is in financial troubles. Even if you do get yourself unsubscribed, do you even go through the troubles of getting a refund? 2 of these companies sent me proof of subscurbtions with the 1 showing it was done through the cell c app and the other says "Cell C Doi over WAP" and that I subscribed through a short code. HOW??? I would suggest that everyone delete their cell c apps and check if they are subscribed to any services and log complaint. To check if you are subscribed or block your number from subscription services dial *133*1#
You need to dial *133*1# to manage your subscription services and to block all existing and future content billing.
