My simcard and phone number was suddenly permanently deactivated without my knowledge because it is "not in use". I did not even receive notification from Cell C that they would deactivate my number (which I have had for years and have registered on banking profiles, apps etc). You can't just deactivate a person's number in this day and age. How many OTP's am I now no longer going to be able to retrieve? How many accounts and profiles am I now going to struggle to log into? The number they've deactivated is also ironically the number I have registered on Hellopeter. It should be standard procedure to send an email or SMS to the person whose number they have on record prior to deactivating it. As soon as I realized I suddenly had no "cell service", I sent Cell C a customer care query. Two days later a Cell C agent called me and told me the system says my number has been permanently deactivated (and her tone suggested there was nothing she or anyone could do about it) and said that the solution was: I have to now buy a new simcard, RICA it, get a new number, re-register all my profiles and accounts under that number, let all my current contacts know that Cell C deactivated my number and now I have a new number - all because I haven't bought airtime or data in a while because I use wifi and a router like most people living in 2024. I'm so annoyed I don't even think my new Sim will be a Cell C Sim. I've had terrible experiences with Cell C anyway. They're not getting a dime off of me anymore! 😡
If your system can send "Cell C settings" notifications and "you qualify to win R5000 in airtime" ads, your system can AND SHOULD send a "if you don't buy airtime or data within the next 72 hours we're going to ruin your life by deactivating a phone number you've had for ten years" notification. Pathetic!
