No roaming? Ridiculous

I have been really unimpressed recently. I have had this cellc contract since 2007 and now I have left the country for 6 months on an exchange program. Now CellC refuses to activate the roaming on my simcard as they say I do not have an unlimited contract. I have a top up contract and thus could recharge my account whenever required. Why would I need an unlimited contract for this service? How is a top up simcard different from a prepaid simcard (on which I'm told roaming is possible)? This is a huge inconvenience! I had to phone my bank in order to use my internet banking as my one time pin was sent to my cellphone. Now my cellphone has broken and I cannot reactivate my WhatsApp messenger on the correct number because this sim cannot receive SMSes. How can a cellphone company have such a ridiculous policy? I'm also told that my simcard will become inactive during the next six months as I won't be able to use it and I'll have to pay even more for a new one. This is so unacceptable!
