CellC Refund for data purchase through FNB App

Dear Cell C,

I recently bought 30GB of data on the FNB app for Cell C.

Cell C have a data package that lasts a year and I thought that I was buying this package when I went on the FNB app. I cross checked the price of the package that lasts 12 months with the cost of the package that I was buying . I paid R899.00 and the package that lasts for 12 months also costs R899.00 so that is the one I thought I was buying. The packages on the FNB app aren't labelled in the same way they are labelled on the Cell-C website so it isn't possible to know exactly what I was buying.

After the purchase and to be extra sure, I checked my balance on *147# and the package and the package I bought only lasts 3 months.

I tried phoning Cell-C, but they said there is categorically a no-refund-policy as the response to me trying to switch the package to the one that lasts for one year. I learnt that the 1 year package can only be activated in store.

My questions to Cell C are: 1. If the two packages cost exactly the same amount, why does one last for 12 months and one for 3 months. Is this a mistake? 2. Why are refunds not done? If a customer buys something and wants to return it or swap it within the next 30 minutes (without using the product - data in this case) that this should be accommodated by all retail companies. I noted in this article that Telkom and MTN do offer refunds: "https://mybroadband.co.za/news/cellular/178268-i-bought-data-bundles-from-vodacom-and-mtn-and-tried-to-get-a-refund.html". 3. I'm happy to spend the money with Cell C and as the bundle that I want and the bundle that I bought have exactly the same price, can I please switch them?

Kind regards, Dylan Flint

Kindly note that the 30GB Bundle valid for 365 days is  only available for purchase on the    Cell C  website.
The bundle you purchased via the FNB App is a normal data bundle which can be purchased via online banking or our USSD strings.  Should you not be able to fully enjoy your bundle within the 90 days we now offer you an option to rol***** your unused data. Simply dial *147# select option 4 for bundles then the rol***** option.  Unfortunately we are unable to refund you for he bundle purchased and the bundles cannot be swapped out.

Our team will be in touch to provide clarity on this matter.

Dear Cell-C, Thank you for the quick reply. I have just checked the roll over option you mentioned and it costs R614.41 for a 30 day roll over. That means that I would pay R1500 for 30gb of data to last 150 days as opposed to R899 of data to last 365 days. The alternative roll over was R307 for 1 or 7 days. Roll over is a good idea in theory, but in practice this is not feasible and is a poor suggestion due to the high costs. I am still unhappy with the resolution of this issue and would like you to address the following three points. Once we have worked through these, then I will be happy that the issue has been resolved. 1. As I paid the same amount for the two bundles, I don't understand why I can't swap one for the other. In the extreme case, surely this is a simple case of logging on to a system and manually changing an expiry date? 2. I think that Cell-C being unwilling to swap out one package for another, given 1) the fact that the FNB website does not specify the exact duration of the bundle and 2) the cost of the two bundles are exactly the same is a major shortfall of Cell-C's business operations. What plan does the company have to address returns in future? 3) Does the consumer protection act apply to Cell-C? If it does, please tell me if Cell-C's decision to not swap or accept a return is in contradiction to the consumer protection act as well as the process I need to follow with the regulator to escalate my complaint is not adequately resolved by Cell-C. Kind regards, Dylan
