Cell C refuses to take my money
I’d like to preface I’ve been a an on and off cell C customer for numerous years. I've tried other solutions but Cell C's price and coverage have kept me coming back.
I’ve spent the past 2 years on prepaid because I felt I did not need a new phone and purchasing large data packages was far more cost effective. I tried to apply for a new contract in August of this year. I app**** for a contract with the new iPhone XR (R760 P/M). I was told I did not have enough of a credit record (which makes no sense see further down). I was I advised I should apply for a new contract with a lower value to increase the score, which I did.
I recently tried to upgrade the contract... It’s the new iPhone 11 (64GB) contract. It’s currently going for R760 P/M. I was rejected on premise that I don’t have any accounts with debit orders. This is false. They are using a system that does not record all my ongoing debit orders. Yet because they are not able to spend the time to analyse my bank statements they have lost potentially R18240. I even have the new ongoing debit order for a cell C account that has never been rejected for the past 2 months (R210 P/M).
Cell C you are making a mistake here and I would seriously considering making an active effort to adjust your credit scoring system. Why?
Here’s why:
I currently earn a salary substantially above average. Soon to be more as I’ve recently been promoted. (You have my bank statements and payslips to verify this so feel free to check this) I put away more than a quarter of that each month (in fact within 2 months just with cancelling those savings I can pay off the entire 24 month contract) I currently have 2 different debit orders from two very reputable companies. (WebAfrica - R1029 P/M & Virgin Active - R498 P/M) I’m happy to send these invoices to you. But you can probably see them on the bank statements I sent you. I have credit card with a current limit of over R80K. I have cheque account with overdraft of over 40K. I work for one of the worlds most reputable companies (it’s name is shared with the worlds largest rainforest) who are more than will cover up to R700 of my cellphone costs.
I’m possibly one of the least risky customers you have. I’m happy to prove all of the above to get this contract. If I do not receive a response rectifying this issue by the end of this week I’ll be cancelling my Cell C contract and moving over to one of your competitors. This is not how customers should be treated. Your credit systems should be revised.
Thank you for contacting Cell C.
We've raised the matter, and our team will be in touch.

Cell C never actually reached out to me. Greatly disappointed. I will be cancelling the contract and moving over to another network. Unfortunately, much like their website and credit checking ability, the customer service is abysmal. I will be advising all potential new clients to stay away from Cell C.
