Cell C International Roaming Nightmare

TLDR: Cell C international Roaming - Staff gave me 10 different answers.

Here is my experience copy/pasted from an email to Cell C customer service C, about my experience when my husband went overseas and I tried to get him International Roaming.

1) Cell C Staff: International Roaming is activated automatically once you leave. (This was Before he left South Africa).

I told my husband I didn't trust that answer and I called again to recheck.

2) Cell C Staff: You have to insert the code *102*6# before you fly. (This was Before he left South Africa).

We did that and Cell C send a message saying they are processing the request

My husband landed in the UK. International Roaming wasn't working.

3) Cell C Staff: Your husband has to call us directly from his phone. You can't phone on his behalf.

How? How does he call Cell C from overseas without International Roaming?

Why? I am the SIM owner of both our phones. The SIM is registered to my name. I was calling from a Cell C number. With each phone call, Cell C requests that I insert the number to which the query relates, every time.

Each time I had to answer security questions relating to the SIM. Why put me through that if it all remains irrelevant?

4) Cell C Staff: International Roaming only works in Mozambique, Nigeria and Canada.

What? Why such a random selection of countries? Do you mean to tell me that the UK and the USA of all nations would be excluded from this service?

5) Cell C Staff: He can dial the code from the UK. It will definitely work.

Spoiler alert, it didn't.

6) Cell C Staff: I have activated International Roaming on my side. I assure you it worked. The problem is definitely solved. Yes, I promise.

This was a blatant lie. We kept the agent on the phone for this.

7) Cell C Staff: You should have checked our website. The USA and UK don't qualify for International Roaming.

You read correctly. Your staff tried to tell me that the two most influential countries on the globe were not good enough for your company to provide a service to. Cell C staff were able to blame-shift with a clear conscience.

8) Cell C Staff: You should have dialed the code before he left South Africa.

We DID. Why the blame shifting? By this stage my mother had taken over the phone calls on my behalf. She spoke to your staff in Zulu, Sotho,Xhosa, Afrikaans and even Greek to make sure they understood. I'm not exaggerating, I have a video of her doing it. If you add English, that is 6 languages. Your staff appeared still not to grasp the magnitude of this.

9) Cell C Staff: International Roaming doesn't automatically come with your SIM. You needed to buy a special Cell C SIM card for it.

This was a blatant lie. If this was the case why would we not have been told at the on-set?

10) Cell C Staff: We're sorry for the inconvenience. Why don't you use Wifi calling?

How patronising! As though something this simple had never occurred to me. What about instances where there is zero WiFi access? If there were no barriers to communication without WiFi, would International Roaming not be obsolete? Isn't the entire purpose of International Roaming not to curb the effects of this?

Hi Niki

Thank you for getting in touch.

We have received your review regarding the activation of International Roaming on your Prepaid line.

Please accept our apologies for the service you have endured thus far. We currently do not have a roaming agreement for our prepaid customers with the United Kingdom. We are constantly working on improving our service and extending our roaming agreement.

Currently  we have WiFi calling as an option to stay connected while you are over seas. You simply need a device that has WiFi calling enabled, a WiFi connection (to use as your network) and you can respond via private reply if you would like us to activate the service from our end.
