Cell c doesn't work when there is load shedding
How can a whole service shut down with load shedding? I couldn't even call or sms when the power was out and I needed to make an emergency call, couldn't even use roaming or anything like that. Absolutely terrible!

Thank you for making contact with Cell C.
Load shedding has a massive impact on all cellular operators in South Africa. Depending on what load shedding stage is in effect, loss of power can result in significant outages on both mobile networks and Internet exchanges.
We’ve put as many measures in place as possible to guard against reception loss during load shedding. Various factors affect coverage in areas where load shedding is occurring and those factors affect operators in different ways.
We have generators assigned to sites where there is high traffic, but it’s not possible to cover all areas affected by load shedding. Additionally load shedding hits without warning and by the time generators are in place more areas have been affected.
All sites are equipped with back-up batteries, however we experience high rates of vandalism and theft at network sites and as such have to constantly replace batteries. Theft and vandalism increase significantly during load shedding. In addition, load shedding depletes the efficacy of batteries, because they are not given adequate time to recharge. This means that battery backup becomes shorter every time.
We apologize for the inconvenience caused during load shedding.
