Distressing Treatment and Unfair Practices at Cash Crusaders Richards Bay

I have been a loyal Cash Crusaders customer for many years, from Johannesburg to Richards Bay, using the store for pawning, selling, and purchases. Sadly, my recent experiences at the Richards Bay Boardwalk branch have been deeply disappointing.

On 24 February 2026, brand new watches were accepted to be pawned without any proof of ownership requested, yet a tablet was rejected outright for lack of proof. No lawful alternatives such as affidavits or confirmation letters were offered, despite being permitted under the Second-Hand Goods Act. When we tried to pawn tools belonging to my partner, the service was cold and dismissive, with staff citing “policy” instead of informing us of available options.

On 8 March 2026, when paying for a pawn extension, I encountered the same employee who had previously caused me distress. I politely raised my concerns, but the cashier ignored us and even instructed my partner to turn his cap backwards, making us feel ********ized. This humiliating treatment left us unsettled, causing us to misread the contract and bring the wrong amount, which led to forfeiture of our pawned item.

With unemployment so high in South Africa (around 31% nationally, with youth unemployment exceeding 60%), it is disheartening to see employees openly disregard customer needs without fear of consequence, while other unemployed individuals are in need of such opportunities. This raises serious questions about management oversight.

Due to my lack of confidence in branch management, I am escalating this matter directly to Head Office and now publicly through HelloPeter.

I expect Head Office to act swiftly to correct these injustices and restore confidence in Cash Crusaders’ commitment to fairness and respect.

Following my formal complaint about the Richards Bay Boardwalk branch, I received a call from the branch manager. Unfortunately, the manner in which he approached me was far from respectful.

He began by asking me what my complaint was, despite having the detailed letter I had already submitted to Head Office. He then focused only on the first part of the letter regarding laptops. When I tried to explain that I was never given the chance to negotiate as I traditionally would in other stores, the call was abruptly cut off. I have not heard back from him since.

This lack of professionalism and failure to follow through only adds to my concerns about management oversight at the branch. It demonstrates a continued disregard for customer needs and accountability, which is unacceptable given the seriousness of the issues raised in my original complaint.

I am now escalating this matter further, as the branch manager’s conduct has reinforced my lack of confidence in local management. I expect Head Office to provide a formal written response and take corrective action.

Second Ticket Closure Without Resolution – Cash Crusaders Richards Bay Boardwalk

Complaint:

I am deeply saddened by the continued lack of accountability at Cash Crusaders Richards Bay Boardwalk. The day before yesterday morning, (7 April), I received a call from the branch, but unfortunately missed it. Despite my clear request for a written response, none has been provided.

This morning I woke up to an email stating that my escalation ticket has been closed. This is now the second time my ticket has been closed without properly resolving the matter at hand. The follow-up process is sloppy, disregarding, and shows that customers are not a priority.

The issues raised in my original complaint remain unresolved, and the dismissive conduct has only caused me more distress. I respectfully request that Head Office reopen my ticket, provide a formal written response, and take corrective action to restore confidence in Cash Crusaders’ commitment to fairness and respect.

Aggressive Conduct and Second Ticket Closure – Cash Crusaders Richards Bay Boardwalk

Complaint:
I am deeply concerned about the continued lack of accountability at Cash Crusaders Richards Bay Boardwalk. Despite submitting a detailed complaint and requesting a written response, my ticket has now been closed twice without resolution.

Most recently, I received a call from Mr. Denver B Nwj, who stated he was from the Richards Bay office. Instead of addressing the complaint based on my email, he insisted I repeat the details, became pushy, and repeatedly accused me of having “an attitude” and being “the problem.” When I reminded him that as a customer I should not be spoken to in that manner, he responded rudely and sarcastically, repeating my words back to me. The call ended in a shouting match, leaving me shocked and distressed.

This conduct is unacceptable and demonstrates a pattern of dismissive and aggressive behavior. Customers deserve respect, transparency, and accountability.

Key Issues:
- Failure to provide written correspondence despite repeated requests.
- Premature closure of tickets without resolution (twice).
- Misrepresentation of the Second-Hand Goods Act by the branch manager.
- Aggressive and disrespectful conduct by staff, including Mr. Denver B Nwj.

Call to Action:
I respectfully request that Cash Crusaders Head Office reopen my ticket, provide a formal written response, and take corrective measures. I will escalate this matter to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) and the KwaZulu-Natal Consumer Affairs Office if no resolution is provided.
