Follow up review on bad service and not standing by warranty
This is a follow-up to my earlier review regarding Car Care Clinic Craighall and the issues surrounding the work performed on my vehicle. I recently spoke with the current owner of Car Care Clinic Craighall concerning persistent faults that remain unresolved following their previous work on my car. As highlighted in my initial review, the vehicle experienced a timing issue—specifically, the timing had jumped. This diagnosis was later confirmed by another qualified mechanic. As many automotive professionals and enthusiasts are aware, if a vehicle’s timing jumps by one or two teeth, the engine’s valves are typically not damaged, as you even get engines with variable valve timing or adjustable camshaft pulleys. The initial issue involved faulty hydraulic lifters, which were replaced by Car Care Clinic Craighall due to excessive noise. Unfortunately, the noise has persisted post-replacement, indicating the issue was not resolved. On a previous visit, they also inspected the oil pump and pickup, confirming that the pump was functional and the pickup was clean. They then advised me to use thicker oil (20W-50), which I did—yet the problem with the hydraulic lifters remains. This past weekend, I returned the vehicle to the workshop in an effort to have the unresolved issue addressed. However, I was informed by the technician that the warranty on their previous work was void because I had another mechanic reset the timing, making the car drivable to get the car to them as they wanted me to tow the vehicle to them. I had made it clear to them that I could not afford to tow the vehicle and had no other option. The mechanic involved in resetting the timing did not touch or open the cylinder head. Despite this, the owner refused to honor the warranty and complete the repair, asserting that I "do not know what I’m talking about." His behavior was both aggressive and dismissive. He also claimed, incorrectly, that even a one-tooth jump in timing would inevitably result in valve damage—a claim which is widely disputed by experienced professionals in the automotive field. The owner further stated that he is aware I may report the matter to the Retail Motor Industry Organisation (RMI) and insisted that he welcomes such action, claiming he is preparing documentation to support his case. He also noted that he saved my previous review and intends to present it to the RMI, while accusing me of dishonesty in that review—despite the fact that the timing issue was verified by another mechanic. He stated that if the timing belt had been loose, it would be hitting the covers. However, the design of my particular vehicle does not have timing belt covers, making this argument irrelevant. I also have photographic and video evidence showing excessive play in the timing belt at the time of the incident. In conclusion, Car Care Clinic Craighall has shown a complete lack of accountability for the work performed—or more accurately, the work improperly done. Their handling of this situation reflects poor customer service, unprofessional conduct, and an unwillingness to stand by their workmanship. Given my experience, I strongly advise potential customers to avoid Car Care Clinic Craighall. Based on my dealings, I have no confidence in their integrity or technical competence. It is also worth noting that the business has changed ownership multiple times in recent year, which may be a contributing factor to the inconsistency in service quality. They are more than happy to take your money to do half-@$$3d.
