What happened to Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication?

What was once a true breath of fresh air in the archaic banking industry of South Africa, Capitec has joined the ranks of another corporate giant with fingers in many pies and seemingly master of none.

The new app and internet login process are ridiculous. I completely understand security first. But what is with all the biometric capturing?? Now when I have to scan a QR code to access internet banking WHY must I take a selfie each time? What does Capitec do with this mountain of biometric information and more importantly who is it shared with? The Department of Home Affairs?

To further 'compliment' their IT genius. Services like 22/7 can't update Capitec accounts. A fix was meant to be out last year in October...now apparently the end of January 2024...never mind that the problem has been since June 2023.

And since Capitec is now also a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) aka Capitec Connect the service is touted as the cheapest in SA. It is also the worst. There are many MVNO's in South Africa. All of them running on Cell C's network. The data reception in my area is weak, to say the least. During loadshedding it is ZERO.

Seriously, rather use Vodacom LTE. 5GB for R99 compared to Capitec Connect 1GB for R45...that just may work if you are lucky.

For the most part I must thank David Lekgothoane for trying to make contact with me to address my complaint. However, we were not able to eventually speak to each on the phone.

After the first missed call I received an email saying he was trying to make contact. I rep**** to explain that I work during the week and cannot always accept calls if I am given no notice. I missed another call the following day. In the email received I rep**** asking to be called at 4 pm. This was Wednesday 17 January. No call was received at 4 pm.

On Thursday 18 January I went into a meeting just after 4 pm. A few minutes later I received another call from David and once again, had to decline the call. When I checked my email after the meeting I had received another email stating that the case had been closed on their side as they could not make contact with me.

On Friday, 19 January, I phoned Capitec Complaint Services asking to speak to David. Unfortunately he was available as he was on lunch. Fair enough. The agent I spoke to said he would send David a message to call me back. Alternatively he asked if I had any availability for the following week. I was not able to request a specific day and time. So I gave a window of 2-4pm Monday to Friday. I have since not heard back from Capitec Complaint Services.

In one of my reply emails I did state to David that my complaint was more of a statement as I know Capitec cannot 'solve' my issues.

To date:

  • Capitec Connect reception remains intermittent and unreliable in my area (Cape Town, South Peninsula).
  • Vodacom, being a true cellular service provider and not a Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO), remains more affordable and reliable in my area.
  • In order to login to Internet Banking it remains mandatory to take a Selfie every time.
  • Services like 22Seven still cannot access Capitec accounts due to Capitec IT extending the fix date for a third time. I confirmed this with 22Seven today 5 February 2024. At this point, no fix date has been provided.

I am completely powerless over Capitec's integration with other services. And at this time I really am not going to rush to change my personal banking. However, if the integration remains incompatible within a couple of months I will definitely move my personal banking. As for another selfie to login into Internet Banking, forget it, that is not happening again. I simply won't use the service. Porting back to Vodacom is a no brainer which I will do during the course of this week.

I had to make an update to this post as I now sit with a real world situation that completely cuts me off from performing any transactions on my Capitec accounts. I think this is an obvious flaw in their overt security measures.

It's simple. My phone's screen stopped work yesterday. Now, as a direct result:
  1. I cannot access the Capitec app
  2. I cannot access internet banking because I can't take a selfie

My Capitec account is now as useless as my phone.

Not to worry Capitec, I will get a new screen or phone for that matter for the privilege of transacting with Capitec.
