Unsettled Debt Leads to Unexpected Account Block: A Cautionary Tale

My friend asked to borrow R200.00 for the weekend and I kindly lent it to him. However, he took 3 months to repay me, only giving back R143.00 instead of the full amount. When I asked him to payme the remaining R57.00, he mentioned financial difficulties and refused to settle the debt. This led to a disagreement between us. Subsequently, to my surprise, my Capitec account was blocked by the ***** department.

I contacted Capitec customer service for clarification, and they informed me that the R143.00 repayment I received was flagged as *****ulent. They advised me to file a police report and provide an affidavit along with certified copies to resolve the issue. I followed their instructions, but later received a message from the ***** department stating that the person who sent the money should handle the matter.

When I reached out to the individual, our previous argument resurfaced, and they declined to cooperate in making the necessary affidavit. Desperate for a resolution, I revisited the Capitec bank to update them on the situation. However, they informed me that due to the ***** suspicion, my account cannot be reopened. I was bewildered as to why my account was penalized, considering I was the recipient with no knowledge of any *****ulent activity.

As a result, my account has been inactive for a year, holding my funds amounting to R680.00, excluding the disputed R143.00 repayment.
