Unfair Banking Practise

I went to the Capitec Bank ATM in Meyerton today 01/09/16 at 08h00 to withdraw money from my SASSA account(pension) as well as money from my husbands Capitec savings account. I then proceeded to deposit both withdrawals into my Capitec savings account via the ATM. However one banknote (R200} was rejected due to the banknote being damaged. I immediately went into the branch to advise them that I had received the defected banknote from their ATM and that I could not deposit it into my account.

I advised the consultant that I had withdrawn the money using my SASSA card. The consultant then, after speaking to head office, advised me that there is nothing Capitec can do about it as it is a SASSA account. Now I really fail to see the logic in this reasoning. The money, after being withidrawn is mine (pension), and the defective note came from the Capitec ATM. I subsequently spoke to the manager who confirmed this. Apparently, as I was advised, they cannot refund the money into a SASSA account and that I must go to SASSA bank to rectify this problem. How is this right??? I am not even sure the defective note came from the withdrawal with the SASSA card or if it came from the withdrawal on my husband's Capitec card. Neither the consultant nor the manager would listen to my reasoning.

I fail to comprehend why, I as a pensioner, must go to SASSA's bank and rectify the problem??? This has now resulted in me placing a query once again with head office who advise that it takes 3 working days to sort this out. It has cost me in bank fees (Capitec charge for withidrawing with a non-Capitec card) and also airtime phoning a call centre to lodge a complaint.

Is this normal banking practise? I am now sitting with a defective R200 note and due to no fault of my own I cannot use it.

Because of the way we were treated and received by the consultant and manager it made us feel as if we were not being believed and that we were actually lying. I find insulting and find it extremely offensive. There was just an aura of couldn't care and arrogance from the bank officials. Notwithstanding that now my debit order due to go off today will most probably be returned due to insufficient funds and once again due to not fault of my own.

This is most unacceptable that any person should be treated in this manner and all because of negligence on the banks part.
