Repeated Issues, No Resolution, and Unacceptable Customer Service from Capitec
After months of ongoing problems and unfulfilled promises from Capitec, I feel compelled to publicly share my experience to warn others about the bank’s deeply flawed service and support structure.
Capitec has repeatedly failed to deliver even the most basic level of customer service. I’ve had to follow up multiple times, re-explain myself across departments, and chase down information that should have been provided immediately. To date, numerous serious issues remain UNRESOLVED:
1. Unexplained Credit Card Interest Charges I was charged: R768.74 on 8 March 2025 R81.14 on 7 April 2025 Both were charged despite full payment before the due dates. Despite repeated requests, I’ve received no breakdown or explanation. Other banks quickly supply this, but Capitec doesn't... I find this suspicious. This is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about Capitec’s transparency and accuracy.
2. ATM Card Failure – Recurring and Ignored My debit card continues to fail at ATMs when traveling abroad (even after I've informed Capitec of my travel dates, destination, etc. and activated international transactions via my app and set my limits correctly!) — the same issue I had last year (Incident#***), which was also never resolved. Happened again this year, after I was promised it won't. I've sent multiple follow-ups with screenshots and received no proper explanation or assistance. I've contacted forex at Capitec, Customer Service even my branch, which is Capitec Tygervalley... all my communication was just ignored.
3. LiveBetter Rewards Discrepancy In May 2025, I earned R171.58 in rewards. The only valid deduction should have been R7.18 — yet I was paid only R160.86. That’s a discrepancy of R3.54. While minor, it highlights a worrying pattern of inaccurate calculations and poor system logic within Capitec's rewards program. Again...
4. Unjustified Fees Ignored I was charged four R3 fees (totaling R12) on my credit card, which I disputed with proof via email. To this day, no response or resolution has been provided. This kind of negligence is unacceptable from a major financial institution. It was never reversed.
5. Fragmented Complaint Handling Capitec’s internal systems are a mess. Every time I follow up, a new agent or department gets involved, and I’m forced to re-explain everything from scratch. Cases are constantly escalated or duplicated, making it impossible to track or resolve anything. Reference numbers are inconsistent, and there’s no clear ownership.
6. Repeatedly Getting My Name Wrong Despite numerous interactions, Capitec staff have frequently addressed me using the wrong name. This lack of attention to detail is both unprofessional and disrespectful.
7. Unprofessional WhatsApp Support Twice now, I’ve been in the middle of a conversation with a Capitec agent on WhatsApp, only for another agent to suddenly take over without explanation. When I asked why the handover happened: The first time, I was told the agent had gone to lunch. The second time, I was told the agent had gone into a meeting. Both times, I had to repeat myself entirely. A simple heads-up or proper handover would have been respectful and efficient. This level of unprofessionalism is shocking for a financial institution.
Final Thoughts: Capitec has failed in nearly every area: - No transparency - No consistency - No professionalism - NO resolution
At this point, I am at the point of closing all my Capitec accounts and am compiling all communication to file complaints with the Financial Ombud and ICASA.
I strongly advise anyone considering Capitec to think twice. When something goes wrong — and it will — you’ll be on your own, chasing basic answers, stuck in a cycle of frustration.
