URGENT COMPLAINT

Dear Capitec,

Today I went to your Tygervalley Branch, with my almost-16 daughter to open a bank account for her.

I had done my homework in terms of the documentary requirements to do. I called your number, googled, checked your Facebook page and lastly also consulted your website. Each of these only mentioned a birth certificate" for identification purposes.

NONE of the above specify an UNABRIDGED BIRTH CERTIFICATE as a requirement whatsover. Also, The name on her abridged certificate matches mine verbatim, as a matter of course.

I have been a Capitec client for a VERY LONG time, it is my only bank account. I deposit my income into this account religiously on a monthly basis. Prior to today I have been very happy with Capitec, however today I reversed my opinion.

The front of house staff were dismissive of our concerns. I can see no reason why an abridged certificate, that displays the same surname as that of a parent with an existing back account and valid ID, cannot be accepted as valid documentation to open a bank account for a minor.

My daughter turns 16 in 10 (ten) days. Her father and I do not have her unabridged birth certificate any longer, and have not needed it (not even to enroll her in different schools). She is really disappointed that she now does not have a bank account into which she can deposit money which she receives for her birthday in just 10 days.

Moreover the requirement for a minor that has already turned16 then changes to that of valid identification card, which delays her bank account by a considerable amount of time. Applying for an unabridged birth certificate takes 6-8wks, according to the Dept of Home Affairs website. An ID card will probably take shorter, but it requires either her father or I to take time off work. We simply cannot do this, due to work pressures, deadlines and Covid restrictions.

We will only apply for her ID card when she turns 18, and we also have no reason to apply for her unabridged birth certificate at this stage.

We require an urgent special dispensation to be able to open an account for her using the existing original abridged certificate (not a certified copy). I can also supply an affidavit as a further supporting document.
