Funds missing

Dear HelloPeter,

I am seeking assistance regarding a matter with Capitec Bank that has been ongoing since 2023.

In 2023, Capitec Bank closed my daughter’s account, which had approximately R17,000 in it. We were informed that the account had been identified as a “mule account” and that it would never be reopened.

Towards the end of last year, the bank reopened the account. However, we were told that the funds were still on hold because an investigation was ongoing.

Earlier this year, we visited the branch again and were informed that they could not fully assist because someone had allegedly reported ***** against the account. After several visits without any clear resolution, I became frustrated and stopped pursuing the matter for a while.

Yesterday, I visited the branch again and was told that the case had been referred to UTD. Just before leaving, I received a message stating that the money had been taken by *****sters and that the bank was unable to recover the funds in time.

This explanation has left me extremely confused. If the account was closed and the funds were supposedly placed on hold pending investigation, how could *****sters access and remove the money? I would like a clear explanation of what happened to the R17,000, when the funds allegedly left the account, and who is responsible for safeguarding money that was supposedly frozen and under investigation.

I respectfully request that Capitec provide a detailed written explanation and assist in resolving this matter. This issue has been ongoing for almost three years, and I feel that I have not received clear or consistent information.
