Frustrated with Capitec – Account Still Paused Despite Proof Given

I am very disappointed with the service I’ve received from Capitec. My account was unexpectedly paused, and even after I went into the branch and provided all the required documents —proof of income and proof of address — my account still remains blocked.

This has caused me serious inconvenience, as I cannot access my own money despite doing everything that was asked of me. The lack of communication and follow-through from Capitec has left me frustrated and questioning their customer service.

As a customer, I expect efficiency and reliability when it comes to something as important as banking. Unfortunately, my experience with Capitec has been the opposite. I truly hope they can improve the way they handle such situations, because right now, I cannot recommend them based on this experience.

i have taken this further

On 25 August 2025, my client duly submitted all documents requested by Capitec, including proof of income and proof of address, in order to comply with FICA requirements. Despite this, on 26 August 2025, Capitec proceeded to pause my client’s account. To date, the account remains frozen and funds remain inaccessible. This action is in contravention of my client’s rights under the Financial Intelligence Centre Act 38 of 2001 (FICA), the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 (CPA), and the common law right to access their own property. Capitec has failed to act within a reasonable time after receiving the requested documents. Your continued withholding of funds has caused and continues to cause severe financial prejudice to my client. Accordingly, we hereby demand the following:
  1. Immediate reinstatement of full account functionality.
  2. Immediate release of all funds currently held in the account.
  3. Written confirmation within 48 hours that the matter has been resolved.
Should Capitec fail to comply within the stated timeframe, my client reserves the right to escalate this matter to the Banking Ombudsman, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA), and to institute legal proceedings without further notice. We trust that Capitec will act responsibly and avoid unnecessary escalation.
