In the first week of November my husband and myself received sms messages from Capitec Bank advising that our debit cards had already expired in October and we were welcome to purchase a new card each at a cost of R53 per card We decided to close our accounts and went to the branch at Randridge Mall to do so. We were then told that we could not close the accounts and withdraw the cash without purchasing new cards, We refused to do this and were unable to access our money. I telephoned the complaints department at Capitec, who promised to escalate the complaint. To date I have not heard another word. Come on Capitec, this money does not belong to you and this is the reason banks show such great profits, because clients cannot be bothered to fight for small amounts in dormant accounts.
