Complaint regarding debit order deduction and fees charged by my bank
Good day
I write in frustration.
Please see attached : my August 2020 payslip, confirmation letter from my employer stating the salary date as the 25th of every month and a recent bank statement showing the deduction by Capitec of the debit order on the 24th instead of the 25th. This early deduction had a ripple effect which cost me a total of R532 which was the honouring fee charged by my bank at R132 for each transaction they honoured. I had made purchases on the 22nd of August at different merchants prior to Capitec’s debit order but to my surprise the debit order overrode all the previous purchases I had made rendering them unpaid. I hasten to point out that Capitec has been debiting the debit order in previous months way before I got paid luckily there was sufficient funds in my account so I had no problem with that. Usually if our pay date follows a weekend or a holiday, we do get paid earlier but that does not change the agreement I have with Capitec that they should debit on the 25th of each month which is my salary date. Unfortunately on 24 August when they debited, there was insufficient funds in my account and my salary had not come in yet, it only came in at 18:00 on the 24th. I phoned Capitec in the morning of 24 August when I realised they had debited earlier and my account was now in the red and they returned the money. I even mentioned that there will be charges and I would like to be refunded. Please see screen shot above of the returned funds to my Capitec account. My argument then is, if Capitec had not wrongly debited why then did they return the funds to me?
I then went to Capitec with the bank statement and asked they pay the R532 and I was assisted by Roberta at the Gezina branch. She asked me for copies of my payslip and confirmation of salary date which I provided but after days of going back and forths she advised me that they will not refund my costs. I am so frustrated. I am 54 years old, recovering from pneumonia and have serious anxiety and hasten to add that the trips to and fro the bank, the phone calls just make me worse off and I don’t think it is fair.
Please address this issue as soon as possible and refund me before I take this matter further. My account has been affected, my reputation with my bank has negatively reflected and this is not the relationship I want to have with my bank.
