Capitec's Ridiculous Online Card Authorisation Process
Honestly, Capitec, what on earth are you people thinking?
I use Capitec Internet Banking on my PC and authenticate using my physical keyring token. This is a deliberate choice. I prefer managing my banking on a computer rather than being forced to rely on a mobile banking app, which I need reading glasses for by the way.
Unfortunately, Capitec has apparently decided that customers who choose this perfectly reasonable banking method should be punished when shopping online.
I can no longer complete online purchases using my Capitec debit card because the transaction authorisation process requires approval through the Capitec app. No SMS OTP is offered as an alternative. No practical alternative is provided. Just a system that leaves me unable to complete my purchases.
And here's the really ridiculous part: **if I use Internet Banking on my PC, Capitec apparently won't allow me to use the app as an alternative for authorising these transactions either.** So customers are left dealing with an inflexible authorisation process that actively interferes with their ability to use their own bank cards. How is this supposed to be an improvement? Banking technology is meant to make life easier, not create unnecessary obstacles for paying customers. I should not have to restructure the way I do my banking simply because Capitec has implemented an authorisation system that doesn't accommodate customers who prefer PC-based banking.
The result? I've stopped using my Capitec debit card for online purchases altogether.
I am now seriously considering moving to another bank. Why should I remain a customer of a bank that makes something as basic as shopping online unnecessarily difficult? Other banks are competing for customers, and I have absolutely no intention of staying loyal to a service that creates problems where there should be none.
**Capitec, here is a simple question: why can't you offer a sensible alternative, such as an SMS OTP or another compatible authorisation method, for customers who use Internet Banking on their PCs?**
I am not asking for anything unreasonable. I want to continue using Internet Banking with my physical token while retaining the ability to make online debit-card purchases. That is hardly an outrageous expectation in 2026.
If Capitec wants to insist that customers must use its app, then at the very least, provide a workable alternative for those who have deliberately chosen not to do so. Not everyone wants to be dependent on a smartphone for every banking transaction.
At this stage, the experience is frustrating, unnecessarily restrictive, and frankly embarrassing for a bank that should understand the importance of customer convenience.
**My message to Capitec is simple: fix your authorisation process, provide customers with a practical alternative, and stop making basic banking unnecessarily complicated.**
Otherwise, I will happily take my business elsewhere. There are limits to customer loyalty, and making it difficult for customers to spend their own money is a rather spectacular way to test those limits.
