Capitec taking advantage of the elderly
I made a personal loan with Capitec Bank in 2012 for R 90 000 and have been paying R3100 monthly for 12 months when I was placed on dept review (Deptcure). I had paid at least R1500 monthly (R 36 000) through Deptcure until my retirement in April 2015. Following my retirement in June 2015, I went to the bank and wanted to settle the account and I was told that my information is not at the branches its at the head office in CT. After 3 months (in August) I visited the branch again where an arrangement with Capitec was made and I was provided with an account number (by Capitec) to which I have been paying a monthly debit order of R1500. I also paid the amount in areas of R 7000 for the months that I had not been paying (not my fault because they didn’t want to help me), which I had paid I was told to continue with my instalments. I received a letter from the bank that my account has been handed over to the attorneys because I haven’t been paying. So, through Legalwise another arrangement was made with a lady from the head office called Candice on the 19th of November 2015 for me to continue paying R1500 until I finish paying off my loan. So, terms have been met and the arranged instalments have been agreed, not missing an instalment, to get the loan paid up as arranged. A total amount at the onset of the loan, an amount of R143 200 plus minus has been paid into this account. After all these years that I have been paying Capitec, in April 2019 I was contacted by DMC telling me that my account was handed over to them in September 2018 because Capitec says I haven’t been paying them. Every month I pay but nothing reflects on their system except for the R7000 I paid in 2015 (Mind you it’s the same account I’ve been paying into all these years). And according to Capitec my last balance outstanding, to my surprise, is R176 000. I also spoke to Roby (ref: ********** 7) from Capitec HO and he said I that I was supposed to renew my payment arrangement with Capitec every 3 months and this I was never told before. Last week DMC sent me an SMS and it said that I have been given a discount and they are reducing my interest by R100 000. Meaning I will be liable to pay R 76 000. It’s unbelievable!! A loan of R90 000 turning into a loan of nearly a quarter of a million rand. How is this legal?? How can you charge interest on interest on interest when the loan was handed over to dept review and you have not noticed why this loan getting out of control on your side? I am pensioner and recovering from a knee operation, I have been visiting your branches and I was sent from pillar to post and yet no one is able to give me clarity. Last week I visited the branch again and still did not get clarity. The head office was contacted and the feedback I got was that I should stop with the monthly payments until the investigations have been completed. And how long your investigation is going to take and what are you investigating??? Common sense would tell you this is not right. " How is this legal?" Could I please get some assistance regarding this? This is not acceptable. To top it all, Capitec said I could reverse my last payment because I was not supposed to pay until investigations are over. But when I went to my bank (FNB) for a reversal, an unknown Capitec account is reflecting and I went back to Capitec to query it and it turns out, the account was closed long ago, and it belonged to someone else whose information is incomplete. My account with Capitec on the other had has also been closed (the same account that was open a few days before. What is happening?
