Capitec reject funeral claim
I have submitted a death claim with Capitec on the 18/05/2026, I got a phone call from them that they are busy assessing the claim. I have waited for the entire 7 days until today the 26 May 2026, they called me to say I am not related to the deceased therefore no payout, I was never told that an extended family is unacceptable as this is my uncle. When went to pen this policy this was never communicated with me and I have been paying premiums every month. Please assist I need the payout I need to attend a funeral.

26 May 2026, 14:27Busiswa, thank you for reaching out and for sharing your experience.
We’re very sorry for your loss and understand how distressing this situation is, especially during a difficult time.
Your funeral claim was assessed according to the terms and conditions of the policy.
Funeral policies cover specific relationships, and based on the assessment, the deceased does not meet the qualifying relationship criteria for a payout under this policy.
In South Africa, there is no law that says a bank or insurer must pay a funeral claim simply because premiums were paid. Funeral cover is regulated under the Insurance Act and the Policyholder Protection Rules, which require insurers to pay claims only if the claim meets the policy terms.
Why relationship matters
Funeral policies are contract‑based. This means:
The policy clearly lists who may be covered (for example: spouse, child, parent, or specific family members).
Only the relationships listed in the policy schedule qualify for a payout.
Extended family members (such as uncles, aunts, cousins) are not automatically covered unless they were specifically added to the policy as a life assured.
Why the claim can be declined
Even if premiums were paid:
The insurer must check whether the deceased meets the relationship criteria in the policy.
If the deceased is not listed or not an eligible relationship, the insurer is legally not allowed to pay the claim, as this would be outside the policy terms.
We hope this explanation has given you clarity.
