Capitec - refusing to allow me to renegotiate my monthly loan instalment without defaulting first
I have a personal loan with Capitec Bank where I pay about 6000 per month. I had tried to negotiate a lower instalment on more than one occasion when I was struggling financially. I was told that the only way to lower my instalment was to default as the system would not allow a renegotiation until I did not pay my installment, however, when I do default I would be listed. I also tried to reduce my monthly installment by paying a lump sum, but was told this was not possible and that by paying a lump sum I could only reduce the term, not the monthly instalment. This feels I have a gun to my head, I am being bul**** and being punished for wanting to ease the financial pressure without defaulting. My feeling is that this is contrary to consumer protection. I have NEVER missed a payment or paid late. I think the low fees offered by Capitec is not worth the bullying!

I don't think that trying to call me once while I was in a meeting and sending an SMS is contacting me to no avail. I would like to add that when I visited a branch yesterday to enquire by how many months my term would reduce if I paid a certain amount in as a lump sum, I was told that Capitec is unable to calculate this. I would first have to pay in my lump sum and then would be told how this affects me. When I explained that it is my right to request this information before I make a payment, so that I can make an informed decision, I was given the excuse of the system being unable to calculate this. Thereafter, I asked for a meeting so that I could explain the above and hopefully have someone competent assist me - I was told that my matter would be escalated to complaints since I was technically unhappy with the service. I am so disappointed in Capitec. Your client base is made of mostly of the "unbanked" poor uneducated people who can only accept the lies you feed them. You do not promote or protect the rights of ordinary South Africans who are not educated and cant challenge you on your questionable practices. Your institution serves to enslave and violate the financial dignity of our people. You really should be ashamed
