Capitec Funeral Cover not properly explained by Branch Staff
Dear Capitec,
When I added my extended family to my policy, I informed the staff that this policy will be for my contribution towards my parents and parent-in-law funerals. No-one asked me, if I know if they are covered by another policy. If they did, I would have said that I don't know, as I still did not know when my father passed away from Covid-19 in December, hence me adding all my parents.
Secondly I put in the claim in February after the 6 month installment was paid already. I was admitted to a mental institute and did not attend the funeral, hence me only claiming then.
Secondly, you do not advertise that you are not allowed to have other funeral policies in place, especially ones that you were not aware of.
Majority of financial products and medical insurance products have their own funeral policy attached to it. You cannot pick and choose between these products. As it was in this case.
I did not insure my father for exorbitant amounts, only for the amount that I would have had to contribute towards his funeral. Children (grown or not) in the SA environment is not privy to such information from our parents. Hence me putting cover in place, for MY contribution to giving my parents a dignified send off.
I myself am covered by a policy at work, which I was not given a choice in, this means that in fact that I should cancel my policy all together with you. And I have cover with financial institutions for other financial products which is compulsory. Which means this policy is null and void.
So basically your branch staff is only trained to set up the cover. You sign electronically and get an email copy or printed copy of the policy after you have signed it. If you have to read all the disclaimers and waivers before signature the process in the bank would take a lot of time. This is not even offered in the branch in any case.
When I added my mother-in-law it was the 1st time that a consultant actually informed me about the 6 month period but nothing about cancellation of other active policies.
I am disgusted to say the least. If not for the waiver period clause, none of this would have come to light. I have to use my own money, which you can see in my bank account for the safe keeping of his ashes at Maitland Cemetery. I felt this was my duty as I was not present at his funeral and wanted to give him a beautiful send off. You have now ****** me twice. With the installment and with me being able to contribute to my father's send off.
You have taken my money and no question was asked ever if anyone is covered by any other policy. Even if you give me all my installments back, you still win as that installments would have given you interest.
As a company that is supposedly a bank for the people, I would have thought that you would waive the period for people that passed away from Covid-19. My dad himself was a client of yours.
So basically you have misrepresented yourself to 2 clients.
But it's fine, I will look for other funeral covers elsewhere and make sure that I read the fine print before adding my thumb print as signature. As you will most definitely cancel my cover with you now that you know that I have another cover, that was imposed on me.
And ja, it's ok, blame me for not reading the fine print post leaving the bank. That is what you are doing now in anycase. Your sales figures went up.
I used to say proudly that me and my loved ones are covered by Capitec, henceforth those words will not be uttered by my lips.
