Capitec Fails to Protect Clients Against *****ulent Deductions

I expected my bank, Capitec, to protect me from unauthorized transactions — instead, I was let down.

When I reported that Rain had deducted R649 from my account without my consent, Capitec’s response was slow, dismissive, and inconsistent. Instead of protecting me, agents kept sending me back to Rain — the very company committing the unauthorized deductions.

Capitec even insisted I pay R70 for a new card and R30 if the dispute failed, despite this being a clear case of *****. It is unacceptable that a bank shifts costs onto the victim instead of holding the merchant accountable.

Even worse, despite multiple follow-ups, Capitec failed to take timely action. I was left vulnerable while Rain continued attempting deductions. Capitec’s “dispute process” dragged on for weeks, with poor communication and no urgent protection of my funds.

⚠️ This shows that Capitec cannot be trusted to safeguard its clients’ money. Their processes are reactive, confusing, and leave customers exposed to abuse by merchants.

I am escalating this to the National Financial Ombud Scheme of South Africa (NFOSA). Clients should not have to fight both their bank and the merchant to be protected.
