Capitec Closed My Account While Holding My International Funds
I am extremely disappointed with how Capitec handled my account and an international payment I was expecting. I received $180 USD from a client via international transfer before the 3-month inactivity deadline on my account. Capitec did not notify me that the funds had arrived. I had to follow up multiple times before I was informed that the funds were received but could not be released because the sender allegedly needed to cover transfer fees. I immediately contacted my client and informed Capitec that the transfer fees would be sorted out. There was no further communication from Capitec after this. Today, I was informed that my account has been closed due to 3 months of inactivity. However: The $180 USD was received before the alleged dormancy deadline. Capitec is now reflecting only $162 USD, meaning $18 was deducted in fees. Despite deducting the fees, the account was closed without releasing the remaining funds to me. This raises serious concerns: If the funds were received before the account closure, why were they not credited and released? Why were fees deducted if the funds were not going to be paid out? Where is the $162 USD currently? Why was I not formally notified about the account closure before this happened? Why was there no clear written communication regarding the status of my funds? Closing an account while holding incoming funds is unacceptable and unprofessional. I expect: A full written explanation of the timeline (date funds were received vs date account was closed). Confirmation of where the $162 USD currently sits. Immediate release of my funds or proof that they have been returned to the sender.
A formal explanation of why proper communication was not provided. This experience has been frustrating and has caused unnecessary stress. I expect urgent resolution from Capitec Bank
