Capitec blocked my credit card because of a separate loan
I am extremely disappointed and confused by the way Capitec has handled my accounts.
I have a personal loan with Capitec which is currently outstanding. I acknowledge that I owe the bank on the loan, and I am willing to discuss an arrangement regarding the outstanding amount.
However, I also have a Capitec credit card which I have been using regularly, and my credit card account is up to date. I have not been missing payments on the credit card.
Yesterday, I tried to make a payment using my credit card, only to find that it was not working. I initially thought it was a technical or network issue. When I contacted Capitec, I was told that my credit card had been stopped because I have an outstanding personal loan with the bank.
I was further told that I need to make an arrangement to pay my loan before I will be allowed to use my credit card again.
What I find extremely concerning is that when I asked for the specific clause or terms that allow Capitec to stop a credit card that is up to date because of a separate loan, I was simply told that I must read the agreement myself. Nobody could clearly explain to me which clause gives Capitec this right.
If this is indeed permitted under my agreement, then I expect Capitec to clearly identify the specific clause and explain how it applies to my situation.
My concern is not that I owe money on my loan — I acknowledge that. My concern is that a separate credit facility which is up to date has been blocked without a clear explanation or reference to the contractual terms that supposedly allow this.
I would like Capitec to provide me with:
1. The specific clause in my credit-card agreement that allows them to suspend my credit card because of arrears on a separate loan. 2. A clear explanation of why my credit card, which is up to date, has been blocked. 3. The terms and conditions under which my credit card will be reinstated. 4. A proper written response rather than simply being told to “read the agreement.”
I have been a Capitec customer and have used this credit card regularly. I believe customers deserve transparency when access to a credit facility is restricted.
Capitec, please explain exactly what contractual provision you are relying on to do this.
