Capitec bank not investigating *****ulent transactions and changing limit settings!
I received a notification of a failed transaction from my account (which I did not make and luckily, I did not have enough money in my savings account for the transaction to go through). I reached out to the Capitec bank WhatsApp support team for assistance with investigating the matter since I suspect that the transaction was *****ulent. The agent that assisted me advised that I will be charged R80 for each transaction that will be investigated, and I need to disable my card and enable it at a later stage once the investigations are complete which can take up to 21 business days. Re-activating the card would mean setting up a new one and I would be charged a startup fee of R70. I explained that I understand that is a procedure they have in place however I would not be able to afford that especially if multiple transactions need to be investigated and I am also being charged for the failed transaction that I did not authorise or make. I then told her that I will reduce my card payment limit to R0 to avoid transactions that I am not making from going through. She explained that doing this would not stop the attempts and I agreed however I was not able to commit to the R80 investigation charge and R70 startup fee. I thanked her for her assistance and ended the conversation.
There was another recent failed transaction and again luckily my savings account balance was low, when I checked my limit, it was back up to the initial amount that I had selected and not the R0 that I changed it to which made me feel violated because I specifically changed it on a permanent and not temporary basis and to see it being updated NOT BY ME gave me chills!
I have been with Capitec since 2016 and never had issues until now which makes me feel that my money is not safe and as a result will be looking at other banks and move money from my skeleton account over to another bank because this violation is totally unacceptable!
