GBV at Caltex Petrol Station, Umlazi

I am writing to express my outrage and profound disappointment regarding an incident that occurred at the Caltex petrol station near Megacity Mall in Umlazi on the 15th of June, 2024.

At around 12 o'clock, my wife was violently assaulted by another customer while she was at the petrol pump. This individual slapped her across the face in full view of Petros, the petrol attendant and supervisor on duty. Shockingly, Petros did absolutely nothing to intervene or assist my wife during this traumatic event.

Later that evening, around 8 or 9 o'clock, we returned to the station to obtain the footage of the incident to aid the police in their investigation. Initially, we were informed that Petros would be available later in the day, as he is the supervisor. When we finally spoke with him, he acknowledged the incident but stated it was not his problem and refused to assist us. When I questioned him about his stance on gender-based violence, he dismissively indicated that he was satisfied with how the situation was handled, which is completely unacceptable.

The assault on my wife is deeply distressing, but the blatant indifference and refusal to assist by your staff, particularly a supervisor, is utterly reprehensible. This incident reflects a severe failure in duty of care and basic human decency.

I demand immediate and decisive action from Caltex South Africa to address this grievous issue. We require a copy of the footage from the incident to assist the police, and a thorough review of your staff's conduct, especially that of Petros. Measures must be implemented to ensure such disgraceful behavior never occurs again. Your staff must be trained to handle such situations with the urgency and seriousness they deserve.

This matter is of the utmost importance and urgency. I expect a prompt and substantive response from Caltex South Africa outlining the steps they will take to rectify this situation
