Card Machine Payment Declines After Customer Bank Notification Confirms The Transaction is Good.

At 06h20, Tuesday morning, 5 July 2016, my wife and I pulled into teh Caltex Jaffers Rondebosch petrol station to top up with some fuel. The petrol attendant assists with putting the fuel and I request from him the card machine. He asks for the card, I handed over to him and he does his thing by inserting it in the machine and processes with the transaction. My wife's phone peeps to indicate that the transaciton was succesfull, but the attendant says that the the machine did not process the transaction yetand that the machine is abit slow in processing the transaction. After about a minute he says to me that the transaction was declined. I asked my wife for her phone to show the attendant that it was true and he says that we must given another card. My wife got upset with him and i asked her to go to the Manager sort out this issue. Apparently the Manager of the petrol station was not in as yet and had to deal with the cashiers inside the shop.

After about 5minutes trying to convince the cashiers and also repeatively showing them the sms notification that the transaction did go thru, they insisted that it was declined on their card machine and that it wil take a few minutes for the transaction to be reversed. We did not have a few minutes as we were on our way to work. They requested for my wife's card and tried again and again the card transaction was declined. I suggested to my wife to rather withdraw the cash and pay them before we get to work late.

We got to work late because of this inconveniece. About an hour or so, a notification came thru informing my wife that the transaction was successfully reversed. The time it took for the reverse to takle place is extremely long. A similar incident happened to me a few months back with my bank card at a restaurant Noordhoek.

But the transaction did not take that long to be reversed. It came thru about 10minutes and this was on a Sunday.

The point of the matter is that petrol station in question's card machines needs to be checked regualrly and done by pepole who knows what they are doing, especially regarding the card machines. This person has have a BSC in IT or similar and is qualified to work on these machines. Not Cashiers or a " I-would-like-to-be-Manager-of-the-establishment" at Caltex Jaffers Rondebosch.
