Veterinary practice has no empathy

The hospital is now way too big and you feel like you're just a number there. The current "owner" Dr Greg Irvine-Smith, operated on our dog, who then died a short while later. We were initially charged for another dog's euthanasia (as well as ours) and Dr Irvine-Smith didn't speak to us, didn't phone and has had no contact with us to this day. We had been going to them for more than 20 years but will not do so again. There IS an amazing vet there Dr Chris Collie, but you are never guaranteed to see him as the business is just too big. As an aside, their consulting fees are more than a person is charged for going to a family doctor.

Highly disappointed

I was referred to Bryanston Veterinary Hospital (BVH) on 21 July 2026 to have my 7-month-old Golden Retriever examined for severe bilateral hip dysplasia. A deposit was paid as she needed to be admitted for sedated X-rays. Later that day, I received a phone call informing me that my dog—despite the referral clearly stating she is female—was repeatedly referred to as “him.” I was simply told that she was not a candidate for DPO/TPO surgery and that I could collect her from 15:00. I naturally expected that the specialist would discuss the findings with me when I arrived. Instead, I was handed an invoice. There was no consultation with the specialist, no written report, no explanation of the X-ray findings, and no copies of the X-rays after payment. When my girl was brought to reception, she was being led on a rope around her neck, pulling so hard that she was choking herself while desperately trying to get away. The happy, confident dog I know was visibly distressed. During the drive home she struggled to catch her breath, and it was heartbreaking to see. I arrived home with a dog who was traumatised—frightened of her own shadow, desperately thirsty and hungry, and with a paw still covered in blood where the IV catheter had been placed. I am deeply disappointed in the level of communication, compassion, and patient care we experienced at BVH. Owners deserve a proper explanation of their pet’s diagnosis, and animals deserve to be treated with kindness and care throughout their stay. I sincerely hope the hospital invests in better staff training, communication, and handling practices to ensure that no other pet or owner has to go through an experience like this.

Our Heroes!

Dr Jandre and Dr Sagitta and all the staff have been exceptional. Our GSD had been sick with vomiting and lethargy for 2 days (with treatment at our regular vet) but took a turn for the worst on 4 July 2026. My vet recommended going to Bryanston Veterinary Hospital for 24 hour care. Our dog was immediately x-rayed and urgent explorative surgery was deemed necessary, as there seemed to be some foreign objects in her intestines. What they found was a mesenteric root intestinal torsion - her intestines were twisted with the arteries, and her intestines were already purple from lack of blood supply and oxygen. They phoned us mid-surgery to prepare us for the fact that she might not survive the surgery. But, Dr Jandre managed to get the intestines untwisted and blood flow returned. He warned us that the success of this particular surgery was less than 20%, plus there was a clot that was also a risk. She stayed in ICU for 6 nights, and Dr Jandre phoned us every day to keep us updated with her progress - and I appreciate his honesty every day - no sugar-coating or false promises. "She's still at risk, but she is doing well and making great progress". I also appreciate that we were able to visit her twice a day and once strong enough, even take her to the garden for a walk. We went for a 2-week checkup and staple removal today, and the genuine care shown by Dr Jandre and his team, is not something we have seen at any emergency vet in the past! Yes, they are expensive, but they saved our girl's life!

*******

I went to Bryanston Vet on Saturday at 12:15 with my son in-law's dog as he was away on holiday I was told I had to wait for 2 hrs as they were very busy but could make an appointment for 2pm which I did and the person at the front desk asked what was the problem with the dog to which I informed her he needed a checkup and I suspect he had ringworm which I had treated and wanted to know if it had cleared up. I arrived at 2pm and had to wait for 45min before the vet saw us. I went to pay the bill only to find out that the rate on a weekend is nearly double the normal rate which I was not informed when I was booking the dog in. The receptionist could have had the decency to tell me the rate for week end as she knew there was no urgency to see the vet. Just a ******* Bryanston Vet. Nothing they could do to reduce the rate!! Will never use this ******* company again..
