Not impressed

Had to pay R385 for a 7kg guitar (same weight as any carry-on bag), to find it in Johannesburg airport lying on the ground in front of BA office with no security or person in the office. Anyone could have done that. Note: British Airways allows x2 carry-ons which they so proudly advertise. Paid R280 to put 80KGs (9 bags and boxes) on a train from Cape Town to JHB! The guitar probably would've have been safer on there too!

Thanks for taking the time to contact us. I do apologise for the manner in which your situation was handled.

With increased fuel charges and associated costs in carriage of baggage it has been necessary for us to review how we best manage this in relation to how we improve efficiency in our business and provide a good customer proposition at the same time (not an easy task). When our customers purchase a flight , the ticket includes a seat plus the 'free checked baggage' allowance 1 bag @ 23kg and hand baggage allowance (1 bag @ 7kg)per person. Any additional value that the customer prefers in addition to this has a cost association which must be borne by the customer. In the long term we believe that managing cost in our business and improving efficiency will allow us to pass benefit on to our passengers by maintaining and even possibly reducing airfares.

Your comments regarding the manner in which the musical instrument was left in the arrivals hall will be sent to the baggage handling company to take cognisance of .

We appreciate your feedback as we are always on the lookout for ways of improving our service to our passengers.

Bye for now

Thank you for getting back to me but actually your website and emails say 2 hand luggage items under "Generous baggage allowance". I would like to be refunded that R385 before I fly with British Airways again.
