Luggage charges
We landed in Johannesburg on the 26 March 2015 after returning from Mauritius this was our last leg of travel. As we try travel at lightly as possible and know we are each allowed an allowance of 23kg each, we decided to pack into one suitcase. We hd no problems from the start of our journey until we returned to Johnnesburg. The ground staff are so rude and have an attitude. We were told that our luggage weighed 28kg for our one suitcase. They then told me to go pay R250-00 for the kilograms over weight. When we went to discuss it with the kiosk staff they told me to go downstairs and buy another suitcase to transfer the 5kg over. We mentioned that we only had one suitcase between the two of us but they were not interested. We then called for the supervisor who said sorry they had a large cargo load and we had to pay. To me this doesn't make sense as we were actually under our 46kg for 2 people. This service was really unacceptable and in future I will be asking for other airlines quotes before I ever book another flight. As for the customer service number it doesn't even help to call as you get told to keep on calling back.
Thanks for getting in touch with us. On behalf of British Airways I would like to sincerely apologise for the service you received from our staff and the frustration caused regarding baggage policy.
We have a new British Airways Comair baggage policy that had been brought about by the Piece and Weight concept that other One World Airlines are abiding by. This means that customers travelling on any British Airways flights operated by Comair will have certain restrictions when it comes to hand luggage and check-in luggage. Customers travelling in Business class or Club are allowed two pieces of check-in luggage each at 23kgs. Loyalty Programme BA Executive Club (Silver & Gold) AA & IB (Platinum, Plus Gold) will also be allowed two bags, each at 23kgs. Customer travelling in economy will only be allowed one bag at 23kgs and one piece of hand luggage at 7kgs. Any additional luggage or extra weight checked in will be charged for. This policy does not take bag pooling into consideration and is now specific to the piece concept and not weight.
We do once again apologise for the frustration caused.
Kind regards,
Thuli
