Shameful service delivery

When I first started studying with Boston City Campus in Lynnwood Ridge I was filled with hope and excitement. However Boston quickly extinguished those positive feelings and turned my experience with their organisation into a nightmare.

The first year went relatively well, although I had to struggle to get my correct second semester marks. Boston did not include my assignment marks into my average and this led to me failing my second semester. However, this was incorrect as I had submitted my assignments on time and the marks were well above average. In order to have this error rectified I was sent from pillar to post. My Lynnwood Ridge campus referred me to the registrar for resolution who was fortunately able to assist me after a long period of back and forth.

The second year was terrible and here is the reason why: the second semester exams were meant to supposedly be handwritten and scanned onto their student portal. But here is the catch, this information was not properly communicated to me as a student and I subsequently wrote my exams on their ColCampus portal as per usual. Boston then proceeded to give me a mark of zero, zilch because my exams were not handwritten and scanned through to them. Their company refused to mark my exams for which I had studied so hard.

To say that I am disappointed in this company would be an understatement. Perhaps the private higher education sector must be more stringently regulated. I feel that Boston grabbed my money and ran, and in the process they tried every trick to make sure I failed my exams.

Dear Pontsho,

Boston’s Invigilated Assessment Event Rules, and any recent amendments thereto, have proactively and transparently been communicated to all students. We have specific rules and procedures in place in order to support the validity of our examinations and the award of qualifications.

In the build-up to the Semester B 2022 examination period, multiple communications (over 10) were addressed to all students detailing Boston’s Invigilated Assessment Event Rules. Webinars (and recordings of these) as well as How-to Guides were also made available to all students. These all covered inter alia the ‘handwriting’ requirement referred to by you, the reasons for same, as well as the steps that we as an Institution have taken to assist students with this – such as providing access to a scanner to assist students with uploading their scripts to our Learner Management System (LMS). The relevant Invigilated Assessment Event Rules are also attached to each Invigilated Assessment Event question paper. All Boston students also have the opportunity to participate in all Invigilated Assessment Events in person at one of our 47 Support Centres.

We confirm that all formal communication regarding marks not being awarded due to a contravention/s of our rules, practices and procedures were timeously communicated via students' official Boston student email addresses inter alia detailing the nature of the alleged irregularity and providing the student with an opportunity to dispute same.

The rules, practices and procedures in place regarding Invigilated Assessment Events are there to support the validity of our examinations and the award of qualifications.

I will be in touch telephonically to help you with the way forward.

Kind Regards,
Matthew de Roos
