Inconsideration towards misunderstandings

I recently wrote a supplementary exam for the HFAC130-1 module. This was a handwritten exam, which I clearly understood in the beginning. So starting my exam I answered the questions on paper however, a file with an answer sheet alongside the exam was provided. This brought great confusion to me, as I did not know if I was suppose to continue handwriting my answers on my paper, print the answer sheet and write on it or simply type my answers on the answer sheet that was provided. So I decided to type my answers on the answer sheet. This then caused an irregularity, which I was informed about. I explained my misunderstanding like I am explaining here and was told that I did not follow the instructions of the exam, which I understand. Furthermore, I requested that my answer sheet should be marked since it was provided and I completed my exam on it. I have not received a response, but was told to re-register for the module. I feel that this is unfair towards me, because if my answer sheet can be marked it will contribute to my final mark determining whether I failed the module or not. Then if I did fail the module, I would understand that I need to follow the procedure of re-registration. At this point no one has came back to me, but the College was quick to send me a quotation on re-registering for this module, without me knowing if I passed or failed the module.

Dear Keanu, As an institution, it is our responsibility to create an environment where all students have an equal opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills. Compliance with inter alia the HE Invigilated Assessment Event Rules (“the Rules”) helps to ensure that all Invigilated Assessment Events are conducted consistently and objectively. Deviating from the Rules, even unintentionally, can compromise the integrity of the Assessment Event and potentially disadvantage other students. As advised in our initial response to you when querying the Assessment Irregularity you received, we have taken multiple steps to ensure that all students are aware of the relevant Rules and the requirements thereof. In addition to this, the HE Invigilated Assessment Event Rules were available together with your question paper. The front page of your question paper stated the following: “The HE Invigilated Assessment Event Rules are applicable. This is a Paper Based Invigilated Assessment Event - you must submit a handwritten answer sheet. We have provided an Assessment Answer Book. If you cannot print this, you may use it as a template to guide you and/or to replicate in your handwritten answer sheet. You may not type your answers in the Assessment Answer Book.” I do appreciate that you have taken ownership of the breach however, while we appreciate that this may not have been intentional, as a result of the Assessment Irregularity, we are unable to award a mark and/or feedback regarding the assessment. You will need to re-register for the module. You failed to make use of the Summative Assessment 1 opportunity and, thus, took away your possible opportunity of a ‘second’ sitting by only participating in the Supplementary Summative Assessment 1.   Kind Regards,Matthew de RoosDeputy Registrar: Academic

I did explain that I could not attend the Summative Assessment 1 and the college told me that the only other opportunity is the Supplementary Summative Assessment 1. So in my view I did not have a ‘second’ sitting and did not intentionally just participate in the Supplementary Assessment 1.
