New BMWs very disappointing
In 2016, I bought a new BMW, and for the first 80 000 km I was a very happy owner. On my way to work one morning, the turbo failed in a spectacular ball of smoke, and I was left stranded next to road. After spending half the morning to get the vehicle to my closest BMW (less than 5 km away) and driving a rental vehicle provided by BMW for a few days, the turbo was replaced under warranty. I was told that by the BMW service centre this failure is not normal, and the new turbo will last much longer. BMW also provided an unlimited km/2-year warranty on the replaced turbo. Now, just 2 years and 3 months after the replacement, the turbo failed again. BMW did not even want to entertain any discussion about this failure. Not just that, the differential was also diagnosed as failing and needs to be replaced after just 116 000km. For a German brand with relatively expensive vehicles, this is extremely disappointing. This vehicle is my 6th BMW, and I must admit that the first three vehicles were great. I bought them second hand and drove them with few and inexpensive issues for many years and kms. It seems that the newer BMWs are built to last just through the warranty period. A very strange issue is that the oil service interval for this vehicle is specified by BMW as 30 000 km, which was adhered to. The engine design states that the engine oil should be replaced every 7 000 to 10 000 km (refer to BMW N13 Engine | Tuning, reliability, problems, oil, specs (mywikimotors.com)). With both failures the diagnosis found that the oil supply and return lines to the turbo was blocked. To me it looks like BMW were overoptimistic with the oil service interval.
