BMW Digital Key Failure

I drive a fairly new BMW 420d equipped with BMW Digital Key functionality, which allows me to use my phone as the vehicle key. This feature has worked reliably until recently.

After my vehicle was serviced, I experienced a concerning issue. I drove the vehicle normally, parked, switched it off and when I attempted to start it again a short while later, the vehicle repeatedly displayed messages stating that the key was missing or not recognised.

My phone was placed on the key tray exactly as required and as I have always done when starting the vehicle. I attempted several troubleshooting steps, including restarting my phone, locking and unlocking the vehicle, opening and closing all doors and trying the process multiple times. Despite this, the vehicle would not recognize the Digital Key.

I contacted BMW Assist via the SOS button. During the call, I had to repeatedly explain that I did not have the physical key with me and that the vehicle is marketed as being capable of operating with a Digital Key. I was informed that I would need to take the vehicle to a BMW dealership for investigation. At the same time, I was told that a locksmith and towing service could be arranged, but that I would first be quoted for the associated costs.

I expressed my concern that I should not be expected to pay for recovery services when the issue appears to involve a feature provided by BMW, particularly as the problem only occurred after the vehicle had been serviced. Fortunately, I was in a safe location and my father was able to bring me the physical key. Had this happened in an unsafe area or while travelling, the situation could have been far more serious. As a woman driving alone, being stranded because the vehicle suddenly fails to recognise its Digital Key raises significant personal safety concerns. This is not a situation that should occur anywhere in the world, regardless of location and customers should be able to rely on a core vehicle access system functioning as advertised.

My concern is twofold:

1. The reliability of the BMW Digital Key system, especially after a vehicle service. 2. BMW’s customer support response, which appeared to place the burden and potential costs on the customer before determining the cause of the fault.

I am sharing this experience to make other BMW owners aware that relying solely on the Digital Key may leave them stranded if the system fails unexpectedly. I would appreciate BMW investigating the cause of this issue and clarifying what support customers can expect when a BMW Digital Key stops functioning through no fault of their own.
