Appalling service and lack of accountability for car under BMW's care
I have driven 7 BMWs and have always said that BMW was a great brand with excellent after-sales service in South Africa. Well, I have changed my opinion of the very poor service I received over the past 3 months from BMW South Africa. You judge yourself from this story: I have an X5 with about 38,000 km on the clock. In December, shortly before going on a short holiday break, the car's service light went on. I arranged with Menlyn Auto to bring it in for a service. When collecting the car, they said that the service indicator was only for a brake fluid change. The day after the service, the car’s oil warning light went on for the very first time. I had to top up the oil and thought it may just have been a borderline condition. On the Wednesday the oil warning went on again and I immediately made an appointment with Menlyn Auto for the Friday the 10th of December. I took the car in again and I was told upon collection that the problem was fixed. We drove to our holiday destination (Sun City) on the same day and, low and behold, the oil warning went on again the next day. I then noticed oil leaks wherever I stopped. I arranged with BMW South Africa to tow my car in to Rustenburg to have it fixed. The car was towed in to Rustenburg and BMW collected me on Tuesday the 14th of December to collect the car. In between this comedy of errors and incompetence I can at least say that the Rustenburg dealership did their work as the leak was fixed. What was quite hilarious after all of this was that I was requested to pay for the oil. Think about that! Imposing costs on the customer for your incompetence and inabilities to perform minor service tasks. And now – for the classic. After returning from holiday on 20 December, I noticed that that tow cap on the front bumper was missing. I looked through the car and found nothing. After weeks of communication BMW South Africa informed me that there is not enough evidence that the cap was lost under their care and therefore I have to pay for the cap and its spray painting. I find this unacceptable service from a reputable organisation.
