High oil consumption on my

My wife bought a brand new Audit A3 Sportsback (1.2TFSI) in August 2013 at Audi Centre Durban. The car came with a Audit Freeway Plan for a period of 5 year or 100 000 km (whichever comes first). The car is a manual transmission. (

In 2016, we noticed the car needed oil to be topped up almost everytime we filled up petrol (less than 700km apart). We then advised Audi of this anomality and they asked us to book the car in for an oil consumption test. At that time the car was below 70 000km and below 5 years, so still under the freeway plan.

We booked the car in and the test was done. On collection of the car, we were told that the consumption was normal. We were surprised by this feedback and were told that maybe we were not using the correct grade of oil. We then asked what grade we should be using and they told us synthetic oil. We then asked what the consumption result mean and were told that the car spec is that it should consume a pint of oil (500ml) for every 1000 kilometres.

I must state at this point that we had to pay R2 300 for this test which I found to be ridiculous given that the car was still under the maintenance plan which in my knowledge has very specific exclusions. We continued to drive the car still giving us this problem and advising Audit at various times.

In February 2019, now the car with more than 100 000 km and over 5 years, we were told to bring it for another consumpition test at a cost of R2800. We booked the car in. On collection of the car we were not told the results like it was done in 2016 where we were told the results when we went to collect the car immediately after the test.

In 2019 we were then told, that they had drained the oil from the car and put in new oil. We were then asked to drive the car until the oil light came on or for 1000 km and that we should not top up oil (something we were not told in 2016). After about 700km, the light was still not on but we were careful to check the oil regularly. When we realised that the dipstick reading indicated that the car had no oil at all we took it to the dealership who checked the oil and found that it was completly empty (before 1000km). I must state that we took the car twice to them within this 700km as the oil was get depleted and the light was not coming on. It was on the second time that they took the car in.

They then told us after the test that the consumption test failed. Without being a mechanic I then figured out that the only thing they seem to do when they do this consumption test is to drain the old oil, top us with whatever quantity, let you drive the car until the light comes on or 1000km then they calculate based on that the actual consumption over travel.

For this Audit charges almost R3000! and I have paid almost R5000 for my two test. Now in my discussion with the service advisor at Audit Centre
