Asami's Tygervalley - Poor quality food and service
I've enjoyed the sushi buffet at Tygervallei Asami's on many occasions and, for the most part, had a pleasant experience. This was unfortunately not the case yesterday, 10 April 2022 when my friend and I decided to eat there.
We went and sat down at the sushi-belt as usual and starting enjoying the buffet. At some point I had a serving of the bamboo rolls (the ones that almost look like a salmon rose with cucumber around the side). The plate had two pieces on it and after eating the one, I noticed something off about the other piece. The cucumber goes around and the ends overlap. That part had a hole through it, about 3-4mm in width. It looked like something had bored through it and the outside edge of the hole was brown and rotten with something white inside which I thought was moving.
I showed the waitress and she said something about showing the chef. 5-10 min. later she arrives with a plate of 8 freshly made bamboo rolls. I told her I didn't order that as we were taking our sushi directly off the belt. She went back to the kitchen and returned a moment later informing me that the plate was a gesture from the kitchen to make up for the unpleasantness. I explained to her why this didn't make sense, because if I wanted to have more of the same thing, I would just order it myself or take it from the belt. The issue was the quality being served.
The manager (or someone claiming to be one) arrived and told me she thought her gesture would suffice to make me happy. I explained to her that nobody had apologized or tried to offer me any practical/relevant solution to the problem. Apparently the hole wasn't made by a worm as I initially thought, but rather a skewer to hold the cucumber in place so they can cut it in the shape to go around the salmon rose. While this may be true, why then was the hole rotten? Was it old sushi? Was the skewer clean when they used it? No explanation could be given and the "manager" resorted to sarcasm when she dismissed my unhappiness at their quality, service and attempt to resolve my grievance. She just said that she is sorry that she offended me by trying to offer me a nice gesture of more food and would leave us to our meal.
I'm still unhappy about the treatment we received for voicing my concern and the fact that the "manager" tried to placate me with a plate of food which probably went back on the belt after I refused it. It's not like I went to each and every customer in the place at the time to ask their opinion of what they thought about the rotten piece of sushi. Instead I tried to resolve it amicably. I hope to get some feedback after posting this.
