Consultant activated a policy without my consent and bank account was debit as a result
I took out a home loan and AON were the preferred provider for providing buildings insurance for clients of the Bank that granted me the loan. I was contacted by Lee Abrahams from AON in order for her to provide me with a quote. I provided information and received a quote but didn't accept it. I informed Lee that I was still considering my options with other providers. This was on the 12th of December 2018. AON did have my information as I once had a policy (which I later cancelled) issued under similar circumstances for another house I insured. Fast forward to 3 January 2019. I was overseas on holiday and when I logged into my account to make sure that I had a sufficient balance for my debit order, to my surprise I saw that AON SA had debited my account to the tune of R4834.42. As there were insufficient funds, the debit order was not provided for. I was then charged by my bank as a result. To cut a long story short. I established that Lee erroneously activated a policy for buildings and car insurance. This she admitted was an error on her part. And because they previously had my details from the cancelled policy, she was able to do this without needed any information from me. I highlighted to her how serious this issue was and I questioned how AON’s systems are capable of activating a policy without a client’s consent and debit order authorisation. In addition, despite error of activating this, how nothing in the form of correspondence is sent to a client informing them that a policy has been activated. This is something that can be seen a serious breach of conduct according to the Financial Services Conduct Authority and not in line with the Policyholder Protection Rules of the Short term insurance Act. She promised to sort it out and refund the bank fee. (4 Jan 2019) This up to today has not been done despite my best efforts to give her an opportunity to rectify. Initially she told me this was approved (8 Jan 2019) and when I pointed it out nothing materialised, she said she will get back to me (18 Jan 2019). I indicated that if this isn't resolved, I am taking the matter further.
