Avoid Alibaba at All Costs

Alibaba.com is a deeply flawed and ************* platform for South African buyers, operating with a blatant lack of customer care and dispute mechanics that actively shield deceptive sellers. While marketed as a secure B2B marketplace, my personal experience trying to source automotive wheels exposes Alibaba's "Trade Assurance" as a complete illusion and a systemic trap for international consumers.

The transaction began with clear, agreed-upon promises made by the supplier's sales representative. However, the moment my payment was processed, the seller immediately engaged in a classic bait-and-switch scheme, stating they could no longer deliver the specific wheels they had promised. When I rightfully requested a full refund for their failure to fulfill the order, the supplier attempted to ****** a $100 penalty fee, refusing to return the full balance of my money.

Escalating the dispute to Alibaba's customer support team revealed a completely dysfunctional, AI-driven corporate structure that prioritizes platform fees over actual user safety: • The Bot Loop: Alibaba's support is run entirely by automated bots. For nearly three months, I repeatedly contacted their team, only to be met with generic, pre-programmed responses that failed to address the physical reality of the ****. • The Quality Assurance Tax: Alibaba charges users for mandatory quality assurance and service fees upfront, yet they completely abandon the buyer when a supplier refuses to ship the items. • Arbitrary Closure: Without reviewing the clear paper trail or intervening against the seller's breach of contract, Alibaba's automated system abruptly closed my case, locking away my funds without an option for human recourse.

Alibaba and its network of unvetted suppliers operate with a level of greed and bad faith that borders on outright ********. Their sense of fairness and customer care is utterly horrific. As a South African buyer who has spent months fighting a losing battle against an unyielding wall of corporate bots, my strongest advice to my fellow South Africans is to completely boycott this platform. Your capital is not safe, your contracts mean nothing, and Alibaba will happily pocket your fees while leaving you to deal with financial theft on your own.

Thankfully I used PayPal and they returned my funds
