AFHCO Burglary @ ILANGA HOUSE (INSIDE JOB) and no JUSTICE
I am a young man aged 28 and I reside with my lady aged 25. I currently live at Ilanga House, Johannesburg.
On 6 November I experienced an incident where my apartment was burgled, while I was asleep. The intruder entered my apartment through the window which was I had opened slightly at 2am, due to the heatwave. (don't normally sleep with open windows) At 3 am, i was abruptly awoken by the screams of my lady and then noticed an intruder was indeed in our room. I let out a scream and alerted my neighbor to the intruder.
I attempted to catch the intruder, who unfortunately escaped via the same window he had entered. (He ESCAPED VIA WINDOW SILL AND ENTERED VACANT APARTMENT NEXT DOOR),
Fortunately the intruder was not armed and nobody was harmed during the incident. The intruder managed to escape with my laptop. During the investigations following the incident, the original/spare key which belonged with security, in the safe, was found to be inside the vacant adjacent apartment, and the door of of the vacant apartment had been unlocked and indeed had signs that somebody had been present.
It was evident that the intruder had re-entered the building and had re-gained access to the building via the vacant apartment.
Worst of all is that the telephone in the unit does not work so one cannot contact security during emergency. In addition to the above mentioned, on the night in question, the CCTV system was also rather conveniently not functioning, which leaves me to believe that the intruder may have had knowledge of this and that this may have been a well orchestrated "INSIDE-JOB". (I.e. Keys of vacant apartment and non-functional, CCTV).
The incident has been reported to the SAPS who are currently performing an investigation.
The incident has been reported to the Building Manager as well as his Superior (Area/Portfolio Manager). There has not been any mention of any formal investigation being performed and instead the issue has somewhat been subdued.
I have attempted to email the Area/Portfolio Manager, on two occasions, via the customer services portal. I have not received any response to date.
It has now been a whole 3 weeks or rather, more than two working weeks since the incident occurred and AFHCO has not implemented any preventative safety measures yet. I.e. burglar bars/spikes.
This is not the first time somebody has been burgled in this building as my neighboring apartment was burgled last year December (2018) and the intruder also entered via an open window. Following the incident in 2018, AFHCO failed to implement adequate preventative measures, which I believe should invalidate their disclaimer.
I am now considering cancelling my lease as I don't feel safe and I don't feel that AFHCO and its Representatives are addressing the matter with any urgency.
I Hope that a more senior representative of Afhco will contact me ASAP and can assist with the concerns mentioned above.
We are aware of the matter and being dealt with by SAPS as you mentioned.
Our Portfolio Manager will contact you for further discussions.
Kind Regards,
