Money grabs for poorly made machines.
Bought an incredibly expensive Aspire E15 laptop in May of 2017 with the intention of keeping it as a long term investment, as I am a student currently studying game design. The warranty was a year long and around a month or so after the warrantee expired, my computer started to have problems (what a coincidence). It would shut down at random continuously and would only stay on if I kept it in battery saver mode or I kept it plugged in. I assumed it was a battery issue since I did my research and consulted several friends, who build their own computers and know a fair bit about hardware problems. Since I am a student I was unable to fix the issue at the time and so could only use my laptop for assignments and some image editing.
Fast forward to two weeks ago. I finally had the money and time to get my laptop checked. I tried starting it up and got an error message several times before it managed to boot up and quickly shut off again. My laptop as not switched on since then. I had taken it to a trustworthy repair center where they promptly told me that my motherboard was fried. I hadn't used my laptop during the holidays as we had guests over, and always made sure it wouldn't overheat while I used it (even though it was never used for games or programs that required a lot of effort on the computer's part). So how is it that my motherboard was so badly damaged after proper use?
I decided it was best to take my laptop to the Acer repair center in Midrand. I explained what the issue was to an unphased employee (who was on the phone while I was waiting to be helped, even though he noticed me sitting right in front of him as I was told to). The quote I received to fix my laptop was over R11000 (almost as much as I paid for the conputer in the first place). My laptop is only a year and eight months old and has been rendered useless. The repair centre didn't even bother to listen to my greviances, nor were they phased by the age of my laptop. My conclusion was that this was yet another money grab on Acer's part.
I'm incredibly disappointed in this machine after I spent so much money on it and care while using it. I am also disappointed that the only help Acer provided was asking me for over 11K in repairs. I've had laptops last me over five years with consistent use - none of these machines had the processor or graphics card that this one has. What a waste of time and money.
