From an extremely disgruntled customer...

From an EXTREMELY Disgruntled Customer...

I moved into our new home in October 2016 and had all the downlights changed throughout the house (85 of them) to LED downlights. My project manager happened to see the ACDC rep (Warren) at Brights store who convinced him to purchase the new ACDC / Caelus Universal All Dimmers, which could dim almost any lamp and had no need to purchase the more expensive "dimmable" LED globes.

So we went ahead and purchased 9 or so dimmer modules and their non dimmable LED globes.

Well...that's where our problems all began...

Firstly not one of the electricians know how this seemingly "new technology" (as I am told by Terrence from Caelus) works. The electrician had to run neutral wires to the lamps which is a huge mission especially if the house is not built new.

These dimmers interfere with each other. We had endless issues that included:

1: Switching on the lights in my daughters bedroom switched on the lights in the main bedroom as well
2. Switching the light on in my daughters bedroom turned the lights on in the spare room.
3: Flickering of the lights as if one is at a rave party with strobe lights

We have had to get the electrician in on multiple occasions in order to try solve this issue. And each time when he hears me call, he drops his head in disbelief as he realizes the reason for my call.

Most recently: the bathroom light would flicker like a strobe light each morning the first time one switched the light on for about 2 minutes before it would settle down.

I then called the ACDC rep (Warren) who thought it could be the dimmer (surprise surprise) and came to give me a replacement which I fitted myself. After fitting it, the lights in our bedroom and bathroom would just cycle from dim to bright and back without being able to turn it off. (See the video clip)

The electrician was called back and checked it and said I had connected it correctly. And tried to reconnect it, with no success. I then was forced to go buy 2 new dimmers to see if that could solve the problem, but it did exactly the same thing.

I then called Terrence from Caelus. He tried to find an electrician who could help. Well...this is where my frustration hit the roof! He tried to convince me that this is new technology that no electrician has heard of before. He as well as the ACDC rep told me that they have never had comebacks, which in my opinion is a complete lie. He in the end got an electrician to call me who in not as many words, told me that this is a ******* product and I must take it back and get the money back for it. After I told Terrence this, he got extremely angry with that electrician and blamed him for putting his product down. (The truth hurts, unfortunately)

So Terrence then tried to get another electrician to come out, who came out today. And once again told me that he has never heard of a dimmer that dims any light bulb and when he told the people at plumstead electrical, they just laughed at him. Although Terrence kept blaming the wiring of the dimmers, the electrician confirmed that they were wired correctly and there was no crossed neutral as Terrence kept using as his excuse. He ended up using a regular shutter dimmer and even then, turning our bathroom light on, would turn our bedroom light on. So basically, these dimmers have a huge amount of interference between each other and other PROPER LED dimmers. I ended up taking out our bathroom dimmer and using a normal switch for it.

Terrence was extremely rude to me today and almost put the phone down on me. I think this is a dudd product, and the fact that he shouted at the electrician for "putting his product down" (the very electrician that he got to try help me) tells you that he is not so keen on people knowing that there are huge issues with it. The truth unfortunately hurts!!! The fact that not one electrician knows about his "new technology" dimmers must also alert one to the fact that they actually don't work. Amazing how when a new technology in a cell phone or new Samsung tv are released, everyone knows about it, yet not with these "state of the art" flickering, one-switch-for-whole-house, ghost infested dimmers!!!

I demand an explanation from the head of ACDC as well as Caelus. I am honestly inclined to demand refunds on all the globes and dimmers I purchased (not to mention the hundred electrician call out fees I've had to pay) so that I can install the real LED dimmers that actually work and won't switch my neighbours house on at the same time!

Call Me! ********** 700
Dr Rael Salkinder

Best regards,
We have concluded our initial investigation, and we are able to give you some feedback Dr Salkinder.
The dimmers that are in question are compatible with all lamp types, except constant power lamps, as stated in our catalogue. It is possible that the flickering you have mentioned is caused by using an incompatible lamp. Generally what we do when selling these dimmers out of our own retail stores, is that we have a demo unit set up, and we test that the bulbs that the customer would like to use in conjunction with the dimmer, are in fact compatible before selling this solution to them. If this turns out to be the case, we will have to further investigate the factors around the recommendation given by our sales person, and find out the best way to correct the problem from there.
The dimmer also has a switch on it to select different settings. If this switch is in the wrong position this could also cause the flickering of the lights.
As to the issue of one light switch switching on and off lights in a separate room, to our knowledge, this is not possible due solely to a dimmer and must be related to the wiring in some way.
If he has not already, our branch manager at our Cape Town branch will be contacting you shortly, to organise to send one of our own technicians out to the site, to see if they can discover what is causing the problems that you are experiencing. Once that is done we will do our best to make sure that your problem is resolved as quickly as possible.

Best regards,
Thank you.
The lamps are the ones that ACDC have recommended. The GU10 lamps. The switch on the dimmer has always been set to default and has never been on CFL.
The wiring has has been checked by a few electricians and have all said it is correct.

Thank you for the additional information Dr Salkinder.
Unfortunately, it is possible for a dimmable LED lamp to still be a constant power lamp, which is why, in our own stores, we test all lamps before suggesting this solution to anyone.
We are confident that our technician will be able to identify the problem for you. Any further speculation on our side until then will not be helpful to you. We will work on a solution from there.

Best regards,
Our technicians have been to site Dr. Salkinder, and we can now offer some feedback.
Warren has tested the light bulbs that you have used, together with the dimmer on our test rig, and has confirmed that the dimmer works in conjunction with the LED bulbs. This definitively points to a problem with the installation. Unfortunately, when our technicians visited, the dimmer had been removed and replaced with a normal on/off switch, so they were unable to check on the installation. They have proposed that if you agree, you can ask the electrician to re-install the dimmer and let them know when this happens so they can be there to witness the installation and highlight any issues straight away.
Our branch manager has already agreed to accept back the additional items that you have requested that you would like to return, hopefully working together we will be able to sort the issue out to your satisfaction.
