Why cant I return clothes without a receipt?

<p>I tried to return a skirt that still had a tag on and a gift card that proved when I purchased the item. The manager John was very rude, dismissive and condescenting. He told me to get over it and email the customer help line. Nice. </p> <p> </p> <p>This makes no sense to me. Please explain why I cant have the money refunded to a gift card?</p>
