I gave Yo-Yo Spitbraai a try for a 38-guest "Lamb Only" function on the 25th April 2026 because of their 450g-per-person promise and positive reviews. I’ve always used Thyme Kitchen in the past and they were amazing, so I had a high benchmark for quality. Unfortunately, Yo-Yo did not meet it. The Experience: Poor Yield: Despite the "generous" 450g promise, the meat ran out before guests could even have seconds. The portions were tiny and visually much smaller than a standard 200g steak. Carcass Quality: The lamb was extremely lean and lanky. The ribs were "bare bones" with absolutely no meat on them. Preparation: Instead of being professionally carved into thin slices to maintain tenderness, the meat was cut into "bite-size chunks." This ruined the texture of the lean lamb and made the presentation look like a tray of s****s. Management & Service Recovery: The most disappointing part was the response from the Operations Manager, Gary. He admitted they "only buy lean lambs" and "don't carve" their meat. When I raised my concerns, he stated he "didn't know what to do or say about this." There was zero service recovery; they refused a partial refund for the under-catered event and instead forced a 10% discount for a future booking on me. A future credit is of no value when the initial product and service were so disappointing. At R155 per head, the value and professional standard simply weren't there. I anticipate a response stating that the carcass weight was "correct" (17.6kg). However, a carcass weight is irrelevant if the animal is so lean that it consists mostly of bone and connective tissue. As a customer, I am paying for a promised 450g portion of edible meat per person. If the carcass provided is too lanky to yield that amount resulting in bare ribs and no meat for seconds, then the service has failed regardless of what the scale said. Using "correct weight" to justify a hungry guest list is poor catering practice. My advice is to take your money elsewhere to a place like Thyme Kitchen and give this place a skip.
