Woolworths: happy to lie and take money, not so happy to help

In May, WFS failed to send my my statement. I enquired via the website and was eventually emailed a copy 2 weeks later, with instructions to retrieve my statements via online banking in future (Lie #1). I was not informed this platform is outside of WFS, nor that a charge was attached. I duly logged on, found my statement, and was then debited R15 for using internet banking. Since I don't bank with ABSA, I have no use for their internet banking, and since WFS is required to provide an invoice each month, I called to cancel. Stephen assured me it was done (Lie #2). Some weeks later, I was again debited. Belmont informed me I have to email ABSA to cancel (Lie #3). This was done, and of course, I have had no response. There is a reason I don't bank with ABSA, after all.

But I complained on FB. Then I received a call telling me that despite me phoning WFS directly (on their Cape Town landline, not their 0861 no), that these agents actually work for ABSA, not WFS (Lie #4?), and they were both wrong, and I actually have to go into a branch to cancel *internet* banking and for them to process a refund.

They were, however, quite happy for me to sign up for the service without providing any FICA documents, and - they have clarified - I can also close my card account telephonically as soon as the balance is paid up. No branch visits or additional documentation required.

Let's see how true that is when I close my account this week.

I have subsequently had a response from ABSA, which places the problem squarely in WFS's court:
"According to our system your Internet Banking service is cancelled.
Kindly be advised that you will need to ask for a refund from Woolworth. "
Well, WFS is still ignoring me, and my requests that they refund the debit they *******ly processed. Gotta love how WW lives up to all its "ethical", "integrity", "customer care" promises.... NOT!
