Voilently Ill from Smoked Gammon

I have been in hospital for four days and eventually diagnosed with Campylobachter bacteria. This is present in chicken, ham and some unpasteurised milk.

Last week I purchased a pre packed package of smoke gammon, my wife and I both had a slice of Gammon for lunch on Friday. My wife was fine but I may have had the contaminated piece. Having been briefed by the doctor, it can only take the most minuscule bacteria to infect a person. The gammon was within it best before date.

By Saturday night I had the most violent and frequent diarrhoea which carried on all night. On Sunday I went to the emergency room, where I was treated, but it was not successful. I returned to the emergency room on Monday, where, I was admitted to hospital as the markers for infection were too high to send me home.

The doctors ran some tests but were unable to determine the cause until they did a culture on a stool sample, which takes up to 36 hours, resulting in a diagnosis this morning of being infected with Campylobacter. At last 4 days later the doctor could prescribe the correct antibiotic and I was discharged today.

We only buy our food at Woolworths, therefore there can be no other store involved.
